The Principles Of The Birthright: Lessons From Esau

Apostle Grace Lubega

Hebrews 12:16-17(KJV); Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

The scriptures give us another example of how a man can affect his position spiritually.

This lesson is taken from the story of Esau.

In Genesis 25, the Bible says, “And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.”

Esau sold his birthright for food.

Think about it. Something as expensive as a birthright was exchanged for a meal simply because his belly needed food.

This tells us that some people affect their positions in the spirit by the constant satisfaction of their carnal appetites and fleshly pleasures.

Watch your appetites child of God. You don’t have to satisfy pleasure because your flesh demands it.

It might be food, alcohol or that boyfriend or girlfriend you are clinging to.

The children of Israel almost compromised their place in the spirit because of cucumbers, and garlic (Numbers 11:5).

You have to make up your mind that those things are not worth the life that God has ordained for you.

Regardless of how strong the temptation, determine to keep your eyes on the prize of the high calling that is in Christ.

Glory to God!

PRAYER: Lord, I thank you for your Word. Thank you for this pattern that preserves me on my course. I heed to this instruction with all my heart in the understanding that you have given me the spirit of self-control. The desires of the flesh have no dominion over me because I am not under the law but under the grace and in this wisdom, I conquer. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
