Genesis 31:19 (KJV): “And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father’s.”

In marriage, identity precedes commitment. Before a person joins their life to another, it is important that they know who they are. When a man or woman enters marriage without clarity of identity, the result is often frustration and misalignment of destiny.
I have known people who, years into their marriage, suddenly declare they need to leave their spouse because they want to “find themselves.” This is the result of entering a covenant without understanding the person God designed them to be. When someone does not know who they are, both individuals suffer the consequences of the other person’s unaddressed inner voids.
This was the tragedy in the story of Rachel. She was destined to be a great matriarch in the lineage of Israel. However, she did not know her place in God’s redemptive plan. Her ignorance of identity showed in her actions. Jacob served the living and covenant-keeping God yet Rachel could secretly steal her father’s idols. In biblical history, we learn that Rachael was the only matriarch to die very early.
An ignorance of identity invites compromises that destroy destiny.
Identity anchors you. It helps you discern what is aligned to you and what is not. It teaches you how to steward the grace upon your life.
When two people who know who they are come together, they strengthen each other’s destinies. But when confusion meets confusion, the marriage becomes a battlefield of insecurity, unmet expectations and unaligned journeys.

GOLDEN NUGGET: When two people who know who they are come together, they strengthen each other’s destinies. But when confusion meets confusion, the marriage becomes a battlefield of insecurity, unmet expectations and unaligned journeys.
PRAYER: Loving Father, I thank You for who I am in You. As I know You more, I understand who I am. I am free from confusion and insecurity. Each day, I gain clarity in purpose and in the vision You have for my life. Every commitment I make is birthed out of this wisdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
