Our theme scripture states a powerful principle of proximity: the behavior and temperament of those closest to us can influence us. If you do not guard your heart, a quarrelsome spouse can gradually influence you toward becoming quarrelsome.
However, this principle works both ways; positive, Christlike character traits can powerfully influence your spouse as well. Understanding this principle is critical to seeing real transformation within a marriage.
You do not have the power to change your spouse. Trying to force, nag, or debate your partner into behavioral change will only breed frustration and deepen conflict. Your responsibility before God is to faithfully do your part.
If you desire to see your spouse become a person of prayer, do not nag them about their prayer life; become a person of prayer yourself. If you want them to exercise patience, model unwavering patience under pressure. If you want them to be generous, lead the way in cheerful giving.
Build your own world anchored in the Word, prayer, and Christlike character. As you consistently maintain that environment, your light, grace, and consistency will influence your partner and become a powerful catalyst for transformation. You do not change a person by fighting them; you influence transformation by creating a godly atmosphere that can bring out the best in them.
