Matthew 2:16(KJV); Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.
The historical accounts of Herod, king of Judea typify the story of man and his thirst for power. For political reasons, Herod favoured the Jews, publicly identified himself as one and had several colossal building projects throughout Judea. He, among other things, renovated the temple and expanded the temple mount.
However, history testifies of the gross extents to which he went to keep himself in power. He married Mariamne I, a princess of the Hasmonean dynasty that had been the ruling Jewish dynasty for years. This he did to secure his claim to the throne and win Jewish favour even though he already had a son and a wife. He chose to banish his existing family instead.
Much later, Herod killed his wife Mariamne I and his sons because he feared they were plotting against him.
In our theme scripture, he orders for the murder of innocent babies because he could not stand the fact that another king of the Jews had been born.
The name Herod is translated to mean hero. Herod represents a hero in the world of men. He stands in direct contrast to the kind of king that Christ represents.
Of Christ, the Bible says, “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.”(Matthew 21:5).
Even though He is God, He humbled Himself to the point of death, even death on a cross(Philippians 2:8).
Our King chose service over position and privilege. In doing so, He challenged every notion of kingship known to the world.
Political power was never His agenda. Death was His secret ambition.
He is the epitome of meekness and the Lord of compassion. He ate with sinners and rejoiced with the lowly. His mercy knows no bounds and His grace is enduringly steadfast. His love is limitless and His kindness unfailing.
He is the King of righteousness and the King of glory. He is the sinner’s saviour and the ever present helper. He is the key to knowledge, the wellspring of wisdom, the fountain of strength, the fortitude of the weary, the fortress of the weak, defender of the feeble, deliverer of captives, the guiding light for the lost and the only hope for humanity.
That is our King!
