The Phaneroo Devotion: Obedience To The Truth: The Place Of Doctrine

Romans 16:19 (NKJV): “For your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil.”

Paul celebrates the church at Rome because their obedience was visible to many. He then charges them to be wise in what is good, that is, to give themselves to the teaching that emphasizes the power of Christ, the person and essence of God, and the victory we have in Christ. He also charges them to be simple concerning evil, referring in this instance to teachings that magnify the depths of the devil’s wickedness and his works of darkness. This reveals to us that there is an inseparable bond between the doctrine one submits to and how they walk in obedience to God’s truth.
Many people view obedience through a narrow lens of “not doing wrong,” but true biblical obedience is broader. Obedience is walking in the fullness of what God has ordained for you.
When you step out in faith to lay hands on the sick and they recover, that is obedience. When you build global businesses and funnel massive wealth into the Kingdom, that is obedience. When you occupy the highest seats in politics or the arts, leading with integrity and excellence, you are obeying the original mandate to take dominion. However, you cannot obey God with the wrong understanding of His Word. If the teaching you submit to tells you that you are a victim of the enemy, or that poverty is a sign of holiness, you are effectively “handcuffed” from obeying God’s call to be the head and not the tail. You cannot walk in victory while believing a philosophy of defeat.
To truly obey, you must understand who you are in Christ. You need the doctrine that reinforces that the Greater One lives in you. You need the teaching that confirms God has given you authority over all the power of the enemy. Your “yes” to God is only as strong as your understanding of His Word. When you are established in the truth that you are empowered for success, your life becomes a natural expression of obedience to the Lord.

GEHOORZAAMHEID AAN DE WAARHEID: DE PLAATS VAN DE LEER

Romeinen 16:19 (HSV): “Want uw gehoorzaamheid is tot allen doorgedrongen. Ik verblijd mij dan ook over u en ik wil dat u wijs bent wat het goede betreft, maar ook oprecht wat het kwade betreft.”

Paulus prijst de gemeente in Rome omdat hun gehoorzaamheid voor velen zichtbaar was. Hij draagt hen vervolgens op wijs te zijn in wat goed is, dat wil zeggen, zich toe te leggen op de leer die de kracht van Christus, de persoon en het wezen van God, en de overwinning die we in Christus hebben, benadrukt. Hij draagt hen ook op eenvoudig van geest te zijn ten aanzien van het kwaad, waarmee hij in dit geval verwijst naar leringen die de diepte van de duivelse boosaardigheid en zijn duistere werken vergroten. Dit laat ons zien dat er een onlosmakelijke band bestaat tussen de leer waaraan iemand zich onderwerpt en hoe die persoon in gehoorzaamheid aan Gods waarheid wandelt.
Veel mensen zien gehoorzaamheid door een eng perspectief van “niets verkeerds doen”, maar ware Bijbelse gehoorzaamheid is breder. Gehoorzaamheid is wandelen in de volheid van wat God voor je heeft bestemd.
Wanneer je in geloof de handen oplegt aan zieken en zij genezen, dát is gehoorzaamheid. Wanneer je wereldwijde bedrijven opbouwt en enorme rijkdom in het Koninkrijk investeert, dát is gehoorzaamheid. Wanneer je de hoogste posities in de politiek of de kunst hebt en met integriteit en uitmuntendheid leiding geeft, gehoorzaam je de oorspronkelijke opdracht om heerschappij te nemen. Je kunt God echter niet gehoorzamen met een verkeerd begrip van Zijn Woord. Als de leer waaraan je je onderwerpt je vertelt dat je een slachtoffer bent van de vijand, of dat armoede een teken van heiligheid is, ben je in feite “geboeid” om Gods roeping te gehoorzamen om het hoofd te zijn en niet de staart. Je kunt niet in overwinning wandelen terwijl je een filosofie van nederlaag aanhangt.
Om werkelijk te gehoorzamen, moet je begrijpen wie je bent in Christus. Je hebt de leer nodig die bevestigt dat de Allerhoogste in je woont. Je hebt de leer nodig die bevestigt dat God je gezag heeft gegeven over alle macht van de vijand. Jouw ‘ja’ tegen God is slechts zo sterk als je begrip van Zijn Woord. Wanneer je gegrondvest bent in de waarheid dat je kracht hebt ontvangen voor succes, wordt je leven een natuurlijke uiting van gehoorzaamheid aan de Heer.

GEBED: Vader, ik dank U voor deze wijsheid. Ik onderwerp mij aan de ware leer en de juiste leer. Terwijl ik over Uw waarheden mediteer, doe ik ze door de onafscheidelijk verbonden kracht van Uw Woord. Mijn gehoorzaamheid is een vrucht van wat ik hoor. Ik gehoorzaam U in het doen van grote en wonderbaarlijke dingen, in Uw naam en tot Uw eer. Amen.
